EXTRA! EXTRA!

In late 2019, Lucas Ihlein worked with the Rizzeria Collective and a sprawling team of collaborators to create a unique project at the Art Gallery of NSW. The group of printmakers, designers, live artists and journalists set up a risograph print workshop in the gallery, and over five weeks, produced a weekly newspaper in the space.

Lucas was invited by John Kaldor to create this project in response to the survey exhibition Making Art Public: 50 Years of Kaldor Public Art Projects curated by Michael Landy. Under the EXTRA!EXTRA! masthead, the weekly printed newspaper responded critically and playfully to the Making Art Public exhibition. Fresh content was generated live by guest journalists and artists, and the newspaper was designed and printed by the Rizzeria collective in situ.

Each week, contributions in the paper bounced off the Kaldor legacy and extended into the real world, tackling contentious ideas around climate change, Aboriginal connection to Country, the archiving of live art, art and censorship, and artists’ labour relations. A special series of articles investigated the decline of journalism in the Australian media landscape, and proposed that artistic journalism (as embodied by the EXTRA!EXTRA! newspaper itself) might offer an alternative mode of investigative journalism to fill this gap.

A complex and multi-layered project, EXTRA!EXTRA! represents an exciting example of what curator Glenn Barkley once dubbed “printmaking in the expanded field”, throwing open the doors of the print studio for public participation, education and provocation.
