Lucas Ihlein is an artist. His work connects socially engaged art, agriculture and environmental stewardship. He lives in Wollongong, on Wadi Wadi and Dharawal Country.

Lucas is a founding member of artists’ collectives SquatSpace, Big Fag Press, Teaching and Learning Cinema (TLC), and Kandos School of Cultural Adaptation (KSCA).

Lucas’ recent projects include Plastic-free Biennale with Kim Williams, as part of NIRIN 2020 Biennale of Sydney; Baking Earth: Soil and the Carbon Economy (with Allan Yeomans); and Sugar vs the Reef? + Watershed Land Art Project (both with Kim Williams and many community collaborators).

From 2015-17 Ihlein was an Australia Council for the Arts Fellow in Emerging and Experimental Arts.

From 2016-19 he was an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award (ARC DECRA) Fellow, based at University of Wollongong, Australia.

In 2010 Lucas completed a practice-based research PhD at Deakin University entitled “Framing Everyday Experience: Blogging as Art”, which won the Alfred Deakin Medal for best Doctoral Thesis in Humanities and Social Sciences.

Lucas works at University of Wollongong as Associate Professor of Creative Arts, in the School of the Arts, English and Media.
